The love of a father...

Our son has apparently become very strong willed over the past week. He's really starting to let us know what he likes, what he doesn't like, what he wants to do and what is simply IS NOT going to do.
One of these things is the way he sleeps. He's started sleeping on his tummy. We tried for several nights starting him out on his back, side, etc...but he wasn't sleeping well. We reverted back to the swaddle which he hasn't been in for a while now and that didn't help either. We couldn't figure out what had happened to our sleeper. Well, he's recently started rolling over in bed. No matter how we put him, he will roll over onto his tummy. He likes to sleep with his hands tucked under his face, unless his thumb is in his mouth in which case he has his head turned to the left. This is the ONLY way he is content sleeping. Two nights ago, I put him on his tummy and he fell immediately to sleep on his own. He didn't wake up until 2 am and when I went in there Cliff was standing over his bed. Little did I know he'd been in and out of there all night, checking on him at least once an hour. He was scared to death of Walker smothering. My heart was overflowing at 2 am that morning when I realized for the millionth time what a wonderful man I have and how much he loves his little boy. He said to me "I'm not ready for this" and so I swaddled Walker and put him on his back. When we went in his room, we found him in the "top" left corner of his bed cuddled up. He'd originally started off in the middle. Well, at 6:45 am he hadn't woken up so I asked Cliff to go check on him...he was already up and ready for golf...to which he replied he already had checked on him. Then he asked me if I had put him on his back at 2 am and I said yes. Well, he said that Walker had completely gotten out of his swaddle and turned to his belly, scooched his way up to his corner and was sleeping soundly. This is exactly how he did his two naps yesterday and how he slept last night. I put him at the very opposite end of his crib last night and when he woke up this morning (no night wakings!) he was on the complete opposite end of where I'd put him, snuggled up in his corner. So sweet. :)
So, we resort to tummy sleeping...

The picture is of him yesterday morning after I went in to get him. He had completely turned sideways and was smiling up at me as if to say "Look what I did Mommy! "

(Notice the swaddle blanket...that's the one he came out of. )

Hey Nicole,
Cliff sounds like my Husband Scott! If it makes you feel better, we could never get Logan to sleep on his back. He hated it!!! He wouldn't sleep with blankets or socks on either! To this very day he will only sleep in his underwear with no covers and on his tummy. I was so worried about him at first and used to call my Mom and talk to her about it. She told me not to worry a bit. She'd say, "I raised 6 children sleeping on their stomachs and all of them are still alive today!" So, that always made me feel better! Plus, it really doesn't matter how you put them when they learn to just flip over anyway!!! Walker sounds just like Logan was at that age! They are so much fun and so busy! Enjoy him!
Take care,
Kim
