I met with the diabetic dietician specialist today. She had some very helpful information. I took a little mini-class on diabetes education and the effects it could have on the baby as well as myself. There are a few risk factors to the baby but they are all minimal and should be able to be avoided with a controlled diet and continued monitoring of my blood sugar. I learned that diabetes during pregnancy occurs because the hormones produced by the placenta in pregnant women can make insulin less effective. This is called insulin resistance and is what has happened in my situation. Basically as the placental hormones increase, more insulin is needed to maintain normal glucose. But, my pancreas is unable to make enough insulin and that results in gestational diabetes. That was the simplest that I've heard it explained and it really helped me to understand better what is going on. The solution seems pretty simple when it comes to meal planning...I have to spread food intake evenly throughout the day and make sure to balance carbs with proteins and fats. I was surprised at the amount of carbs I still get to have. I even had Wendy's today and kept my blood sugar at 104 two hours after the meal...it should be under 120 so I did good!
Anyway, for those of you who care here's a run down of my new meal plan...aka lifestyle. :)

I've eaten well today and had things I like. I don't feel hungry...in fact at times, I've felt like I'm eating more than normal but it's important to balance it out so sometimes I have to, I guess. My blood sugar hasn't risen over 112 at my two hour checks, so that's been good. This shouldn't be too bad!
Walker's new favorite play time is about 1:00 a.m. He just tumbles about with kicks, punches and rolls for about 45 minutes. It's so precious though and I really look forward to it, even though I know I'll be super tired in the morning. The weirdest thing is watching my stomach move and knowing he's moving around constantly but I don't always feel the slower movements. It's so strange to see your stomach change shape and wonder why in the world you can't feel such a thing! I really only feel the faster and stronger movements I think.
I have enjoyed dropping in at work the past few days and seeing people I haven't seen since May. Everyone says to me "you're all belly!" and even though I feel like I'm the size of a whale, I relish those compliments because I know if they didn't truly see me that way, so many people wouldn't be saying it. Tonight at dinner Cliff said "you haven't gotten big at all..." totally out of the blue. We weren't even talking at the moment...he knows the right things to say. :) My dietician even laughed when she saw me because she says that I'm not the typical patient. I'm just bragging on myself now because I know a couple of posts from now I will be complaining about retaining more water than flows through Niagra Falls!
